Linux – Installation conflicts with httpd on Amazon Linux AMI

When installing 'yum install -y php70 mysql56-server php70-mysqlnd' on an Amazon Linux AMI server, I'm receiving these conflicts:

Error: httpd24-tools conflicts with httpd-tools-2.2.34-1.16.amzn1.x86_64
Error: httpd24 conflicts with httpd-2.2.34-1.16.amzn1.x86_64

I'm uncertain how to resolve. The conflicts appear to be with the httpd installation and what I am attempting to install.

It looks like the Amazon Linux AMI has httpd installed by default

Linux – httpd (apache2) server doesn’t parse *.php files but displays them as text with installed php-module

There is/was a missing directive in httpd.conf.

Taken from the Debian configuration:

<FilesMatch ".+\.ph(p[345]?|t|tml)$">
    SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
</FilesMatch>

This directive points Apache to pass on .php files to the PHP module. Often in a while, while adding/deleting Apache configurations, or due to flaws in scripts, this directive seems to not get added to the configuration.

The symptoms of not having this directive, are, as the OP/@tux found out, that php files are treated as yet another text/raw file, and are displayed verbatim instead of being interpreted/executed.

As for what this directive means, taken from the Apache manual

A "handler" is an internal Apache representation of the action to be performed when a file is called. Generally, files have implicit handlers, based on the file type. Normally, all files are simply served by the server, but certain file types are "handled" separately.

Be also wary that to use automatically index.php files, you also need to add index.php to your DirectoryIndex directive.
