Gnome Window – Keyboard Shortcut to Make Window Occupy Half the Screen

Is there a keyboard shortcut I can use to make a window occupy the left or right half of the screen? I'm using a modified version of Ubuntu. On Mac I just use Divvy but I'm not sure if there is a Linux tool to do the same thing.

If you install Compiz Config Settings Manager with:

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

You can then enable this functionality with Grid mode. Go to

Systems > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager

and scroll down to Window Management. Then check Grid mode and, once you open the options for that mode, choose keybindings for Put Left and Put Right.

There's no predefined shortcut, but you can make your own. Install the xdotool utility. The following commands move a window to the top and bottom respectively:

xdotool windowmove $(xdotool getwindowfocus) x 0
xdotool windowmove $(xdotool getwindowfocus) x 9999

(Some installations have the unfortunate bug that using x or y, which is supposed to leave that coordinate unchanged, doesn't take the width of the window border into account.)

To bind a command like this to a key, go to the system settings, in the “Keyboard” panel, in the “Shortcuts” tab. Select “Custom Shortcuts” and click the + sign to add a new shortcut.

In Fedora 24 (which uses Gnome) the key combination Super + Shift + ← or Super + Shift + → moves windows between monitors by default.

If you play with Super + Cursor Keys and then use Super + Shift + Cursor Keys you should be able to move/minimise/maximise windows with ease.
