I3-wm clipboard is cleared when I close a window

I'm using i3 and normally I can copy text between windows no problem but if I close the window where the text is copied from before pasting the clipboard seems to get cleared.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Update: Found that this happens with terminal but not with firefox.

I found out that having a clipboard manager application (like clipit) fixes this issue.

Yes, I just went thru this again on CentOS 5.2 (setting up old dev environment). Add this to $HOME/.vnc/xstartup worked for KDE and GNOME and ICEWM to enable copy/paste between VNC Client on Windows and the Windows host:

vncconfig  -nowin &
export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
autocutsel -fork

Copy / paste text selections between tmux and the clipboard

Use the following tmux.conf with copy-pipe in the new versions of tmux (1.8+):

set -g mouse on
# To copy:
bind-key -n -t emacs-copy M-w copy-pipe "xclip -i -sel p -f | xclip -i -sel c "

# To paste:
bind-key -n C-y run "xclip -o | tmux load-buffer - ; tmux paste-buffer"

prefix+[ into copy-mode
select content with mouse(hold)
M-w to copy that part into system clipboard
C-y the paste it inside tmux, C-v to paste it inside other regular application like web browser.
