One way to do this is using gnome keyboard shortcuts. However, there is an action that is already assigned to that button. I'd like to remove that action but I'm not sure how to change the key binding. When I add a key binding in gnome, it just adds another action to the button instead of replacing it.
You do not have to disable Compiz completely. I had the same issue, but it affected specifically the "Run Application Dialog" and "Open Main Menu". The problem is that Compiz Fusion takes control over some keyboard shotcuts to keep compatibility. This can be configured through the Compiz plugin "Gnome Compatibility" and other areas of the Compiz Panel.
It is very possible that you have a Chrome extension hijacking those keys -- for example, Plex or Google Play.
To investigate, head over to chrome://extensions/, and check out the "Keyboard shortcuts" link at the bottom of the page -- investigate to see which keys may be prioritized by Chrome extensions, e.g.:
Here, it's clear to see that Plex has taken control of the Media Play/Pause, Media Next Track, Media Previous Track, and Media Stop buttons. Simply click the X next to each to un-set that shortcut entirely, or reset the scope to In Chrome if you'd still like those shortcuts to work while a Chrome window is activated. An alternative is to just turn off the extension itself.

It depends which desktop environment you use. The answer that follows is pertaining to Gnome.
GConf is your friend. The actions that are stored for button shortcuts are defined in the gconf configuration database. Two ways for doing so:
gconf-editorand then search for 'bindings'. you can here unset the action-button binding;$HOME/.gconf/or/etc/gconf/schemas(if you are root) for the name of the button that you are looking for, and modify the assigned button.It can remove existing actions with this.
