Debian – Terminator is not working!

Terminator is my choice of terminal in debian. I seem to have broken it while playing with its profile preferences.

I can't open it normally as other applications. However after becoming root I can access it through gnome-terminal. When it opens, the following warning pops up:

An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for terminator. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

Details :

No D-BUS daemon running

Have you tried purging the package and then reinstalling it?

apt-get purge terminator

Then delete configuration files located in your home directory

rm -rfvI /home/your_user_name/.config/terminator

This should remove all the config files. Now reinstall.

apt-get install terminator

The answer to this problem for terminator and remote systems is to create a terminator profile, where the command it runs 'as a login shell' is the SSH connection string used to access the remote server. It is prefered to have SSH key based authentication or openssh controlmaster/controlpath setup to have connection sharing.

Exerpt of a terminator config for this:

~/.config/terminator/config

[profiles]
[[default]]
 scroll_on_output = False
 exit_action = restart
 scrollback_infinite = True
[[remotehost]]
 use_custom_command = True
 exit_action = restart
 custom_command = ssh user@remotehost

And simply run terminator -p remotehost to use this profile. Each time you 'split' terminals, it uses this profile and thus opens a new SSH connection.

UTF-8 in Terminator

I still want to know why my locale settings got so weird after only enabling the en_US locales during installation, but I was able to resolve the issue by adding

export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
export LANG=en_us.UTF-8

to my ~/.bashrc
