Debian Stretch / Gnome: disable sensor-based screen rotation

I still have a constant problem of an HP Zbook screen being randomly rotated by Gnome based on some bad sensor data in the laptop. While I can rotate back with fn–f4, this often causes applications to crash, etc.

I would like to disable the auto-rotation feature altogether. How can I turn off this thing?

The setting to use is

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.orientation active false

Depending on the debian version you are running it can be

update-rc.d -f gdm remove

update-rc.d -f gdm3 remove

Reboot.. Thats it! I just tested it

You can do so by modifying the Xorg.conf by adding the line

Section "Monitor"
     Identifier      "Monitor1"
     Option  "Rotate"        "left"
EndSection

or after login use the xrandr command as:

xrandr --output DVI-2 --rotate left

Replace DVI-2 and left as per your requirement

xrandr solution will be effective till session exist. On reboot, the changes will be lost whereas xorg.conf setting will be reboot-persistant
