How to replace system beep with a pleasant sound in Debian? I do not want to turn it off entirely as it signalizes some notification.

All I managed to found was just manuals to how to turn it off entirely, or "how to-s" for Ubuntu that is unfortunately not proper for Debian (or I did not manage to apply them at least).

If you are using pulseaudio, you should be able to set the system beep using the module-x11-bell module. In /etc/pulse/default.pa, put in:

load-sample-lazy x11-bell /path/to/sound/file
load-module module-x11-bell sample=x11-bell

and it should work!

Well, the easiest is to set setterm -blength, It'll set the beep length to 0.

when it's about X, then I'd advice xset b off, it'll disable the beep in X.

Debian Buster – No Sound Unless Root

I solved this issue for me by running:

sudo apt-get remove --purge timidity

Please make sure this will only remove timidity and timidity-daemon. As far as I understand the daemon grabs some resources on startup and prevents the other services from finding the sound cards. I think timidity has something to do with MIDI files so make sure you do not need this when uninstalling the packages and make sure that you know what you uninstall.

Hope this resolves the issue for some users. You might want to reinstall timidity in the future when the above mentioned issues are resolved.
