Ubuntu – With Adminer.php I get a Access denied for user ‘root’@’localhost’ error. Ubuntu 18.04

Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'

I am getting this error with adminer.php and phpmyadmin won't work either. I am able to run SQL commands in terminal after typing 'sudo mysql'. I have a user table with root as a username but there is no password field.

If anyone can help me to get this to work it would be great.

This solved my problem - can't login as mysql user root from normal user account in ubuntu 16.04

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 and so these instructions work for me.

If you're running n localhost, just type the command below in terminal:

mysql -u root -p

If you're using an external server, enter the host IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) as well:

mysql -hxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -uroot -p

You will be prompted for your password, enter it and you will be able to access your MySQL prompt.

You can try the regular recovery procedure:

Stop MySQL service
Run the service using:
```
sudo mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &
```
Connect (password won't be required):
```
mysql -uroot
```
Revert your changes (be careful this time and check with select what is the current state, host should be 202.54.10.20):
```
use mysql;
update user set Host='localhost' where user='root';
flush privileges;
```
Restart MySQL the regular way
