Ubuntu – Why is /mnt/hgfs not appearing

This might be a basic reason, but somehow I have not been able to achieve it.

I am running a guest Kubuntu OS on a windows one, and I am trying to share a folder between OSes. The VMware tools have been installed properly, VM -> Settings -> Options -> Share Folders is set properly, and my windows folder is shared.

Any idea what else could prevent the hgfs folder to appear?

Solution Copied from Peretz:

In a previous attempt, I installed open-vm-dkms. This was preventing the hgfs file to appear.

sudo apt-get purge open-vm-dkms

and reintalling vmware tools solved the conflict.

I had this exact problem. It turned out IT had installed some old version of VMWare tools with non-functioning vmhgfs kernel module.

My solution was to run the configuration with the clobber-kernel-modules setting to overwrite the existing vmhgfs module.

 sudo vmware-config-tools.pl -d --clobber-kernel-modules=vmhgfs

The -d selects all the defaults for you (remove it if you don't want the defaults).

Install VM-Ware Tools on Linux

sudo apt-get -y install open-vm-tools-desktop fuse && reboot

This command mounts any files that are shared from the host into /mnt/hgfs

sudo mount -t fuse.vmhgfs-fuse .host:/ /mnt/hgfs -o allow_other
