Ubuntu – Which CPU will work best with Ubuntu

I'm choosing between two laptops with an AMD A6-3400 and Intel Core i3 Sandy Bridge. I want to know which CPU is better with Ubuntu as in performance? Using laptop for browsing and programming.

They are nearly the same. The only thing that matters whether all the hardware is recognized by ubuntu. If you can try the laptops with a live cd, bring one, and test. Personally I think AMD did a great job with the Liano platform, it preforms better when it comes to graphics, 3D rendering, HD movies and it even has nice Turbo speeds. Also it has 4 physical cores, and Intel i3 has only 2 physical + 2 virtual (HT). So I would choose the AMD.

I have a hybrid AMD and Intel 3000HD in my laptop. From my experience Intel is a much easier choice. The Catalyst software for Linux is buggy and causes problems, not to mention relying too much on alternative drivers that could black screen you.

Intel HD is by no means perfect, but by default this hardware will work as it should without needing an add in GUI or anything.

As far as gaming goes if these are more than Minecraft and Civilization, you will want to go with the AMD.

Actually there is a a tool named sysbench.

You can install it with:

sudo apt-get install sysbench

To CPU benchmarking you can do like

sysbench --test=cpu --cpu-max-prime=20000 run

where 20000 is like max event count.
