Ubuntu – Where is the VLC logfile for errors

I tried to open a blu ray with VLC, but I got this error message:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

For further information I have to read a log from VLC, but I can not find any log, I only found with which vlc where vlc is located, namely

/usr/bin/vlc

I went there, but found no log file.

You can set the VLC log file location directly in the client by going into the options Tools -> Preferences -> Select "ALL" -> Advanced -> Logging. You can also set the verbosity 0: silent, 1: error/info, 2: warning, 3: debug depending on the level of information you would like in the log file. Then restart the VLC client for the changes to take effect.

Here's what you can do, to start open a terminal window, you can do this through the Dash, or by keystroking "Ctrl + T". Afterwards, what you may want to do is copy and paste the following commands into terminal. You can also, if more comfortable, type them manually. You can copy one by one, or all at once, it doesn't matter. Remember, when in terminal the past command is "Ctrl + Shift + V" instead of "Ctrl + V".

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libaacs0 libbluray-bdj libbluray1
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

That will only get blu-ray to work in VLC. We now need aacs folders, and to download the keys. We just enter a couple more commands into terminal.

cd ~/
mkdir -p ~/.config/aacs/
cd ~/.config/aacs/ && wget http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/KEYDB.cfg

You should be all set now, enjoy your blu-ray movies!

Ubuntu – VLC Plays Local Files, Does not Play Files on SMB Share

That's a known VLC issue. It never did. When you mount your network share, its files are also shown in the /run/user/your_user_id/gvfs folder. Locate the file you want to play in that folder and play it from there.
