Where Are FSCK Results Logged at Boot Time After /forcefsck?

To run fsck on your harddrive you need to boot a liveCD and then run the commands with your harddrive partitions as the target.

"There is no /forcefsck file in my root"

-You need to create the file, it is just a blank file so run sudo touch /forcefsck and fsck will check your drive next time your reboot.

As @Rinzwind pointed out: the permissions on the /var/log directory may have accidentally been changed. In a fresh install they are drwxrwxr-x.

Change your permissions:

# chmod 775 /var/log

and # systemctl restart rsyslog (or reboot). Test the syslog facility with:

$ logger "this message should end up in syslog"
