Ubuntu – When will kernel 3.14 be available in the repositories

I see that kernel 3.14.1 is available for Trusty at

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

When will this kernel be available for upgrade via the Ubuntu repositories.

(I know that I can manually download and upgrade the kernel, but I'd rather get it as an update).

It never will. New kernels arrive at repositories of LTS versions when point releases come out. This is part of the Hardware Enablement Stack.

According to the 14.04.x Ubuntu Kernel Support Schedule, kernel 3.16 (from Ubuntu 14.10) will be available in Ubuntu 14.04.2 (due in Feb, 2015). But you don't have to reinstall your system, once 14.04.2 is out (and probably a few days before) just run the following to install kernel 3.16:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-utopic

Note: test/debug kernel versions higher than your default kernel, e.g. 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, etc. are only provided via deb files, not via this PPA.

You probably want to add this PPA-- the only active one the kernel team maintains -- containing the latest pre-proposed kernel for each release:

ppa:kernel-ppa/pre-proposed

Updates should still work normally once a newer version of the kernel is available from any of your defined software sources.

If you are interested you can see which version apt considers newer with this command:

dpkg --compare-versions [version1] gt [version2]

The exit status will be 0 if apt considers version1 newer or 1 otherwise.
