Ubuntu – What happened to the Nautilus feature “Create Link” in Ubuntu 16.10 and newer

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I was surprised to see that the context menu entry "Make Link" (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+M) in Nautilus doesn't seem to exist anymore. It used to appear upon right mouse click on a file or folder and allowed the user to create a symbolic link.

This answer is suitable for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, since Ubuntu 16.10 the feature preference has changed. The feature still exists ... it just has to be activated. Open Nautilus and go to Preferences -> Behavior.

Enable the option "Show action to create symbolic links". Now you have the "Create Link" context menu entry in Nautilus ... Note : The keyboard shortcut changed from Ctrl+M to Ctrl+Shift+M.

Open gconf-editor and set /desktop/gnome/interface/can_change_accels to true. This lets you edit menu shortcuts.
With Nautilus open, go to File menu, then Scripts, then hover over the Script you want to make a shortcut for.
Press the key combination you want to assign to this Script. You should see it appear on the menu.
Navigate off the menu and test it out.

You need to do this from the File menu of Nautilus...simply right-clicking in a Window to obtain the Scripts list does not allow adding shortcuts.

If you want to remove the shortcut, repeat steps 1 and 2, then press Backspace when your Script is highlighted on the menu. This should remove the shortcut.

Note: you might have to do a "nautilus -q" from Terminal before the gconf change takes effect.

Ubuntu – 13.04 no context menu after rabbitvcs install

You can fix the missing context menu. I suggest removing the installed PPA version and the ppa (How do I remove a PPA added via command-line?), reinstall the version from Ubuntu and follow the instructions I derived from the bug reported: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rabbitvcs/+bug/1093533.

You need to download the following file http://rabbitvcs.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/clients/nautilus-3.0/RabbitVCS.py

Copy it (using root/su/sudo) to:

/usr/share/nautilus-python/extensions/RabbitVCS.py

You may also need to create the following symlink:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpython2.7.so.1.0 /usr/lib/libpython2.7.so.1.0

You will need to restart your session (log out and back in again) to see the changes.
