Ubuntu – What are root and Ubuntu password in LXC ubuntu:16.04 container

I created a Ubuntu container

lxc launch ubuntu images:ubuntu/xenial mycontainer

I can access the container using

lxc exec mycontainer bash

I found mysel logged in as root without asking any password

I see that there is a "ubuntu" user defined

How can I access a software installed in the container (e.g. webmin) which asks for a username and password?

What are the default passwords?

The usual password for these kinds of things is: ubuntu with the username ubuntu

User creation is done in the template file, so you must to change ubuntu template file, i.e: lxc-ubuntu. Templates are stored in /usr/local/share/lxc/templates or /usr/lib/lxc/templates/. Open it with your favorite editor and find the following lines (They are in configure_ubuntu() function of template file):

    chroot $rootfs useradd --create-home -s /bin/bash ubuntu
    echo "ubuntu:ubutu" | chroot $rootfs chpasswd
fi

Replace ubuntu with your own username and password, i.e these line will be:

if [ -z "$bindhome" ]; then
    chroot $rootfs useradd --create-home -s /bin/bash USERNAME
    echo "USERNAME:PASSWORD" | chroot $rootfs chpasswd

Then create your container as usual.

A bit late, but in case someone else is - like I was - searching for an answer to this "obvious" question:

The config file for a privileged container seems to be in /var/lib/lxc/${containerName}/config.
