Ubuntu – What are Launchpad packaging recipes and how can I use them

As I understand it, packaging recipes are a way to automate packaging into a PPA from a bzr branch. What I'm not sure of is how to go about setting one up. I have read the documentation but for some reason it still leaves me a litte confused about what to do.

What is the step by step process of setting up a recipe? (A 'hello world' example would be useful)
What needs to go into the branch? (eg. debian/ directory)
What do you write in the recipe text field and what does it all mean?

The way to go is to upload once for every Ubuntu version.

Launchpad won't build packages for Ubuntu versions that are no longer supported, and only build a package for one specific version of Ubuntu. The targeted version is (as you already know) specified in the changelog file, by the newest entry!

Remember to be aware that the packages your program depends on might not be available at the same version across all versions of Ubuntu.

You also talk about "multi-architecture" (architecture = CUP type, eg. x86, LPIA, AMD64) this makes no difference since every package uploaded is build for all available architectures as long as you have Architecture: any in the package definition (debian/control) file, this also allows you to make the package depend on different packages for different architectures (be defining the package more than once)

Yes, you should indeed create a new branch derived from the vim Bazaar branch on Launchpad (lp:ubuntu/vim), and commit your patch to that branch.

As long as there are no conflicts when merging, the recipe will merge the two branches when one of them changes, and rebuild. This means that if there is a new revision in the ubuntu branch, it will happily rebuild.

The recipe would look something like this:

lp:ubuntu/oneiric/vim
merge myfix lp:~YOURNAME/ubuntu/oneiric/vim/myfix
