Ubuntu – USB ports keep resetting on Linux

Problem

USB Ports (2.0) keep resetting causing connected peripherals to stop working after some time.

Hardware

Motherboard: ASUS J1800I-C
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J1800 @ 2.41GHz
RAM: 4GB

Number of units: > 100 devices working as payment kiosks, all showing same issue.

Tried the above OSs with both UEFI & BIOS boot.

OSs NOT producing any problem with the same hardware:

Windows 7

Symptoms:
On startup, all goes well and USB devices are working for 15~60 minutes.
After this time, one or more ports will start resetting with errors coming in dmesg:

Things I tried and did NOT solve the problem:
I tried to disable autosuspend for USB ports by adding linux kernel cmdline: usbcore.autosuspend=-1 among many other options and they all failed.
I also tried to change multiple BIOS options related to USB, nothing helped.

Useful Facts:
– All USB 2.0 4-ports are causing the problem.
– The board has single USB 3.0 port which seems unaffected by the problem.
– Using powered USB hub connected to the USB3 port, then connecting all USB devices to it seems to solve the problem.
– Using 32bit version of the same OS seems to solve the USB problem. Tested some kiosks with 32bit installation for 3 days uptime and there were no single dmesg warning or error.

Question:

How can I solve this problem on my 64bit Ubuntu 16.04 ?

Converting to 32bit is an unrealistic solution for me as it requires the reinstallation of over 100 devices. Besides, some of my equipment comes with 64bit proprietary SDK.

Update 1:
The problem seems to be unrelated to the CPU architecture and it happened after a while on Ubuntu 14.04-32bit and 16.04-32bit

A possible solution - Blacklisting USB related kernel modules in a trial and error procedure revealed that the ehci-pci kernel module was the cause of the problem.

For a temporary solution, simply remove the kernel module:

sudo rmmod ehci_pci

For a permanent solution, either blacklist the module via kernel boot arguments, e.g.

modprobe.blacklist=ehci_pci

nb. Blacklisting ehci_pci will also prevent kernel module ehci-hcd from getting loaded.

The ehci* kernel modules are the kernel’s USB 2 drivers.

Luckily, the USB 3 kernel modules xhci* support USB 2 devices as well and you will experience no performance loss with these

Unplug the card from your PC (if you have already plugged it )
To run V4L (Video4Linux) Driver in system, you need following packages, make sure you add them through your Synaptic Package Manager.

mercurial

gcc

build-essential

linux-source

AND

type following to download and install your linux headers which is compatible with your kernel

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

You must get a copy of the V4L (Video4Linux) Driver to do so tap the following code in a terminal

$ mkdir tvdrviver

$ cd tvdriver

$ hg clone http://mcentral.de/hg/~mrec/v4l-dvb-kernel

above commands will download a copy of V4l Driver into your tvdriver folder.

Now we have to build the V4L driver and install it into the kernel. to so take following lines in your terminal window.

$ cd v4l-dvb-kernel

$ make

$ sudo make install`

if every thing goes good it will install the driver in few mins without any errors.

At this point your must REBOOT your box (b4 you do so remeber to book mark this page )

You have installed your driver, now it's time to load the Driver. Before we do that I have to tell you this is where my problem was, coz the Driver couldn't detect my device automatically

so until it can't detect the device it will not give you /dev/video0

so what we have to do is we have to do detecting part manually. how we do it..? this is how.

The em28xx accepts the parameter 'card=' when it's loading, is where you have to mention your device number from the driver device list. so my device is listed on 37th location in the list So I'll load my device in to the driver as follows

Sounds like an USB problem to me. Here is what you might try : build you own kernel with a modified hid.h value (usb2.0 driver), to allow the USB 2.0 to be more permissive. I used to do that until kernel 3.11 was out for my Perixx gaming mouse.

Building a new kernel with modifier hid.h value :

1) Open a terminal (ctrl-alt-T)

2) Launch the command :

sudo apt-get install fakeroot kernel-wedge build-essential makedumpfile kernel-package libncurses5 libncurses5-dev

It installs the requiered packages for the kernel building. You can apt-get remove <packages> afterwards to uninstall them if you wish.

3) Enter the following commands to create a directory for the kernel sources :

mkdir ~/source
cd ~/source
apt-get source linux-image-$(uname -r)

4) Type :

cd linux

Press Tab to auto-fill the name, then press Enter.

5) Launch :

gedit include/linux/hid.h

Find (Ctrl + F) the line #define HID_MAX_USAGES and change it's value to '64000'.

6) Launch :

cp -vi /boot/config-`uname -r` .config

To copy the configuration file of your current system.

7) (Optionnal) To speed up the building process, you can adjust the concurrency level. Launch :

export CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=#

Replace # by the number of your CPU's cores + 1 (Dual-core will be "3", Quad-core "5", …)

8) Launch :

make-kpkg clean

To prepare the directory needed by the building process.

9) Launch :

fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-sk kernel-image kernel-headers

This will start the kernel building process. It can take a while (between 1h and 8h following your hardware). If the process is interrupted for some reason, you should launch the command rm ~/source and start over from step 3. The kernel binaries .deb will be placed in ~/source.

To install the new kernel :

1) Open nautilus (file explorer) and go to /lib/modules.

2) Open a Terminal and launch :

cd ~/source

3) Type the following commands and press **Tab to auto-fill the version of kernel, named here (KERNEL_VERSION) :**

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-

Both commands (once filled by Tab) must end by .deb

4) Launch :

sudo update-initramfs -c -k KERNEL_NAME

You have to replace KERNEL_NAME by the name used by the directory containing the modifier kernel (should end with "-sk" in nautilus).

5) Launch :

sudo update-grub

(and also sudo update-burg if you use BURG).

6) Restart the computer.

You now run a custom kernel ! Congrats'

If that doesn't work, the problem is NOT caused by HID (usb2.0 driver) and I have no idea how to help you :)
