Upgrade – Upgrading glibc to Version 2.17 or Higher in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I need a newer version of glibc in my ubuntu version (precise, 12.04), but I don't seem to be able to go beyond version 2.15 using apt-get. I tried to compile it by myself but I almost destroyed my distribution, so I was wondering if someone has gone through this process successfully and would be so kind to guide me.

For such an update you will need to update your Ubuntu completely as every package linking to libc will need to be recompiled. And these are a lot.

The bug report is pretty obvious -- see the last two posts, especially.

The problem is that (their) GLIBC is incompatible with the FORTIFY_SOURCE option set by default by Ubuntu's gcc.

The better solution is to get the latest copy from trunk, where the problem has been fixed; alternately, unset (disable) that option in the makefile or before calling make with:

export CFLAGS=-U_FORTIFY_SOURCE

As j0h described, I was able to solve my problem. Here is what I have done:

I read at Wikipedia about glibc. Glibc (better known as GNU C Library) has a fork for linux which is called libc6. Libc6 is available via apt.
Run apt-get update to update the database.
Use apt-cache policy libc6 to find out the installed version and the candidate version, whereas the installed version can be also shown with ldd --version.
Install the new candidate version with apt-get install libc6
Check the new version again by doing step 3 again to see your success.
