Ubuntu – Unity has disappeared

I realise that this question has been asked before, the best example being here (Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears).

I should mention I have never used Ubuntu before today, and it was working fine for a few hours before Unity (as I have learned it is called) disappeared.

My problem is identical to the OP of the above thread, however none of the solutions have changed anything for me. I am using 12.10.

unity and compizconfig-settings-manager are both installed.

Here are a list of commands suggested in the above thread that have failed:

ccsm in terminal, and then checking the unity plugin is enabled: it is
unity --reset when I do this command, terminal responds with 'reset function is now deprecated'
rm -rf .compiz-1 does nothing – terminal does not respond

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Try this: open a TTY with Ctrl+Alt+F1. Login with your username and password. Stop the desktop with sudo stop lightdm, reinstall Unity with sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity and finish the dirty job with sudo start lightdm.

The version of Unity that will be released in 11.04 is definitely implemented as plugin(s) in Compiz. (I've seen it with my own eyes...) This is described in a little detail in the blueprint on Launchpad.

It will also certainly be possible to use convential GNOME or the GNOME Shell, though perhaps not in the manner you describe disabling the plugin. It is more likely to be an option at the login screen (if you have it installed).

Ubuntu – Unity Launcher and Top Panel disappeared in 14.04

Enter the following commands:- Ctrl+Alt+F1 login there with username and password

WARNING! THE FOLLOWING COMMAND WILL TERMINATE YOUR ACTIVE SESSION!

try:

sudo service lightdm restart

If restarting lightdm doesn't fix the problem, install aptitude and then install unity:

sudo apt-get install aptitude
sudo apt-get update && sudo aptitude -f install && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
sudo aptitude install unity

Read the outputs carefully. If you do have broken dependencies, aptitude will give you the "solution" of NOT installing unity. Say no to this solution. Then it will give you another solution which will install broken dependencies. Say yes to this one. Once installation is complete, sudo service lightdm restart again. If you still have some issues, also reinstall ubuntu-desktop:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

followed by another sudo service lightdm restart.
