What version of Ubuntu are you using?

Looks like there is no openjdk-6-jre for Ubuntu 12.10

You may see at java packages page that there is only openjdk-7-jre available.

The official java packages has been removed from the Ubuntu repositories. You can install open-jdk instead:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk

If you need the real thing you need to install the oracle java package:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

It turns out I needed to explicitly add support for 32-bit architecture to the system.

openjdk-7-jre:i386 installed successfully after I did this:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre:i386

NOTE: ia32-libs and any other necessary prerequisites are automatically selected and installed when you install openjdk-7-jre:i386. There's no need to install ia32-libs manually, and it's best to install the automatically selected libraries to ensure you definitely get the right version etc.
