Ubuntu – Ubuntu tweak tool – Mouse cursor would not change theme

I tried to change the cursor theme from DMZ-White to DMZ-Black for my laptops. But it does not work for one of my laptop.

For that laptop, it does not work no matter I change the cursor theme in
– Ubuntu tweak tool,
– or changing it in gksu gedit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme,
– or changing it in sudo update-alternatives –config x-cursor-theme

What else can be done to change it? Thanks in advance!

sorry turns out that my mouse cursor is partially changed…. in the main content of firefox browser, the cursor is changed to black, however if the cursor is on the launcher / File/Edit/View bar, it is still white.

That is a known issue. To change your cursor globally follow below instruction.

Open terminal and paste gksu nautilus hit enter then insert your password hit enter.

You will be now viewing nautilus as root. now go to file system on left panel.

Navigate to /usr/share/icons/default and open index.theme with your favorite text editor and change DMZ-White to DMZ-Black.

Or you can apply this change easily by executing the below command

sudo sed -ri 's/DMZ-White/DMZ-Black/g' /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme

And it's done! Either Reboot your computer or run the command to see the changes

compiz --replace

Multi-user 14.04

If you have only one user on your system, it will be ok to change default curser theme, whether by copying DMZ-Black contents onto DMZ-White, or changing default index.theme content, or even using command sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme.

But on a multi-user system, you need to personalize for yourself alone without affecting other users. Well, it's not so hard. You just need to make a "default" curser theme under your home.

Let's change the cursor theme in steps:

Via Terminal

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-theme "DMZ-Black" – simply replace "DMZ-Black" with your desired theme
mkdir ~/.icons/default
gedit ~/.icons/default/index.theme
copy the following lines in the text file and save it:
```
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=DMZ-Black
```
– again replace "DMZ-Black" with your desired theme.

Via GUI

Install Dconf Editor or Unity Tweal Tool to be able to change the cursor theme;
On Dconf Editor, search for "cursor-theme", double click it and change the value to "DMZ-Black" or your desired theme.

Alternatively on Unity Tweak Tool under Apearance, go to Cursors and select "DMZ-Black" or your desired theme.
Open Files (Nautilus) and go to ~/.icons (make one if there isn't any);
Make a new folder, name it default and open it;
Make an empty document and name it index.theme;
Open the file, paste the following lines and save it:
```
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=DMZ-Black
```
You can replace "DMZ-Black" with your desired theme.

This works also on Synaptic Package Manager and Nautilus with root privileges.

Ubuntu – Can’t change window header style in Ubuntu 14.04

You can try this commands in terminal. Any of these command can solve your problem.

If something has been changed in compiz window manager (ccsm), this command will reset compiz.

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

If you have more than one window managers then you can try this command to make compiz your default window manager

compiz --replace

If unity is the reason of problem, you can reset unity too with this command

unity --reset
