Ubuntu – Ubuntu Software Center 12.04 does not install software

I am new to Ubuntu, and I have just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a computer. I am using an automatic proxy server. When I select a software package to install and input my password, the progress icon displays for a few seconds, and then it stops. I tried to install different programs, and I always had the same problem. I can browse the web with Firefox, so I know I have a network connection. I do not see any errors or anything. What should I do?

Just use synaptic package manager, even though it's not as fancy as the software center. To install it type: sudo apt-get install synaptic in the terminal.

I set the proxy details in System > Network and applied them system wide but I was unable to use the Software Center (Firefox was fine). I read in another question here somewhere that a user did sudo -H gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf and put in Acquire::http::proxy "http://user:pass@proxy:port" even though he didn't use a username and a password for the proxy and it worked for him.

I DO need to enter a username and a password, and my actual username and password entered in that string wouldn't work, BUT when I just put in the actual words user:pass the Software Center started working!

You can set proxy in System Settings --> Network --> Network Proxy.

If it still not OK for apt, you can use several methods, I personally use method adding the following lines to /etc/apt/apt.conf:

Acquire::http::proxy "http://username:password@proxyserver:port/";
Acquire::https::proxy "http://username:password@proxyserver:port/";

Save and reboot
