On a fresh 12.04 installation I wanted to install the ubuntu-restricted-extras.
Therefore it needs to remove libavutil51 and libavcodec53.
So, as there will be installed libavutil-extra-51 and libavcodec-extra-53, is it a simple substitution or is it a dependency bug, a conflict between the two versions…?

PS: btw, what's the difference between the 'normal' and the 'extra' version?
First, be warned that it might not be legal in some countries, because of software patents.
With that being said, here is how to install it, click here:
Or you can open up a terminal and run the following command:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Select yes, and you'll have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed and working.
You can use synaptic. If you don't have it installed, just press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the command(s) below:
sudo apt-get install synaptic
Once done, open synaptic, by typing it in dash, and once it opens search for ubuntu-restricted-extras, right click, and choose Mark for Complete Removal, and then click on Apply.

It is just a simple substitution.nothing else
The difference between normal and extra is that the extra ones do not comply with the open source policy. there are some patent and copyright restrictions associated with them thus installing them is separately required. check this for more details
