Ubuntu – Ubuntu no longer prompts for root privilege (but doesn’t give it either)

So on 14.04 LTS I was playing around with some settings to solve another problem, and somehow managed to screw things up and now Ubuntu no longer asks for root privileges before trying to perform administrative actions. The catch is that my user does NOT have them by default, which means those actions ALL fail.

I can still run "sudo " from terminal and it'll ask for my password and work fine, but any GUI that requires root just fails without asking anything.

Any ideas what I did wrong and how to solve it?

I had the same problem after changing to ubuntu-desktop from lubuntu on my imac. It seems, that 'policykit-1-gnome' was missing. After reinstalling sudo apt-get install policykit-1-gnome and logout-login it works flawlessly.

The shutdown on the cog-wheel checks if you are allowed to shutdown the machine. This is done via PolicyKit. In case of shutdown this statement in the file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.consolekit.policy is checked:

There is a daemon running in the background with root-Privileges that invokes the shutdown command for you.

When you want to be able to shutdown the machine "the old way" via command line (shutdown, reboot, halt, ...), then you need to add the suid-Bit to those commands. But be aware, everyone on your system, that has access to the shell could then shutdown your machine.

Create a file in your home directory. For example at /home/morbius/.servercreds

Into that file enter your credentials. You must specify the user name, workgroup, and password - one per line

<username>
<workgroup>
<password>

Then your gio command would look like this:

gio mount smb://<server>/<share> < /home/morbius/.servercreds
