Ubuntu – Ubuntu blank purple screen on startup

I have Ubuntu 14.04 32bit LTS installed along with Windows 8 (dual boot).
I do not have any graphics card(nvidia ,amd ,etc). I have Intel hd graphics driver. It worked fine for many days, but now, on booting, GRUB boot screen works fine but when I choose Ubuntu (in grub menu) startup gets stuck with blank purple screen(with no splash screen).

On pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ubuntu splash screen (with white dots turning purple) shows for 2 seconds and then PC reboots.

I've tried to remove and reinstall lightdm (my default display manager)
from recovery mode but no success

In my case I have a problem with grub rootdelay. After 20-30 sec try to hit Enter write exit (you didn't see it on screen) and hit Enter. System should run OK. Then you need to modify grub config.

But if it can't work try something else from this thread.

After searching and searching online I've found the answer to this problem and the solution is quite simple.

Apparently it's because the graphic drivers don't load quickly enough during the booting sequence so by the time the graphic drivers are ready booting has almost finished and thus either no plymouth screen is shown or a very quick fast of it is seen.

So the solution I found and it works is to add a simple line to the following file.

gksu gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash

then add:

FRAMEBUFFER=y

Save the file, and then :

sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

This command will update the initial ramdisk containing the drivers needed by the kernel at boot time. The parameter -k all updates all of them if you have more than one kernel installed. Reboot and all is well.

This works in ubuntu 12.04 too.

Ubuntu Sunrise (plymouth)

I use an old favorite "Ubuntu Sunrise" in 12.04 (In fact I have been using it since 10.04 LTS). It's easy to install (instructions below) and it has never caused me any issues. However you should note that changing your Plymouth may cause resolution issues depending on your own resolution.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1:

Download the Plymouth Sunrise deb file from here.

Step 2:

Open the Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) and type

gksudo nautilus

Step 3

Copy ubuntu-sunrise folder to /lib/plymouth/themes
Copy the file splash into /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d (Optional, for better buffer)

Step 4:

Type in the terminal

sudo update-alternatives --install /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth default.plymouth /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-sunrise/ubuntu-sunrise.plymouth 200
sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

Step 5:

Choose the number associated with ubuntu-sunrise in the options that pop up.

Step 6

Type in the terminal

sudo update-initramfs -u

Then

sudo reboot

That's it.

Note: Some people have issues installing other Plymouth themes (I've never had any) and I would strongly advise you to take a look at these issues here at Ask Ubuntu to familiarise yourself.
