Ubuntu – Ubuntu 18.04 screen strobing

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04, and I am experiencing subtle (but constant and rather annoying) screen flicker. My computer is an HP Envy x360 Convertible 15-bp1xx; using Intel graphics driver. The flickering is not specific to any application, but it is more visible in large medium-gray areas (e.g. applications with dark themes, desktop backgrounds, etc.)

I just ran into the same issue. Was fixed by changing the refresh rate to 59.96 or 59.93 (it was on 60.01) - no clue why. Just opened display settings and fiddled around after reading much older posts on similar issues.

I solved it myself by using amdgpu.dc=0 as a boot parameter.

To do this, edit the file /etc/default/grub, for example using

sudoedit /etc/default/grub

Find the line beginning GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add the text amdgpu.dc=0 between the double quotes (""). Leave any other parameters as they are. For example, you may end up with a line like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.dc=0"

Save the file and exit, and then run

sudo update-grub

to write the configuration, and reboot.

Finally a simple change of resolution from 1920 x 1080i to 1920 x 1080 (at Settings - Devices - Displays - [choose the problematic display] Resolution) worked.

Just putting it out there if someone ever stumbled upon this problem.
