Ubuntu – Ubuntu 18.04 3D acceleration on VirtualBox

I installed Ubuntu 18.04 on VirtualBox and then set the 3D acceleration ON and when I try to start it, it shows and stays like this:

It worked fine with Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10 but doesn't work with 18.04. I have Windows 10, Nvidia GPU, latest Virtualbox and drivers. I'm using GNOME with Xorg.

Using the .iso provided in the Ubuntu repository (https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/all/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/download) resolved this issue for me on Virtualbox 5.2.8. On Windows just download and extract the .iso using 7zip or similar.

I experienced exactly the same issue when I installed the dkms driver from the Ubuntu repositories via apt-get. Simply reinstalling the Guest Additions using the VirtualBox Guest Additions CD solved it.

Ubuntu – Ubuntu 18.04 keeps freezing (nvidia)

I had a problem with radomly freezes on Ubuntu 18.04 but with Geforce 9600M GT graphics but only with proprietary driver 340. Problem was in Adaptive Mode. This graphics have three or four clock levels. When I set up only full performance mode on boot I had never more any freeze.

Try adding this to autorun:

nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GpuPowerMizerMode=1
