Ubuntu – Ubuntu 17.10 black screen Nvidia issue

I get a black screen after booting with Ubuntu 17.10 and Nvidia. Seems a quite common problem already mentioned in many posts.

I have tried all options posted here and here , but nothing worked (each one individually and all options altogether)

• In /etc/gdm3/custom.conf: uncommented "WaylandEnable=false"

• In /etc/default/grub:` add at the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT the parameter "nomodeset" or “nvidia-drm.modeset=1” (in both case I kept “quiet splash security=selinux selinux=1”)

• reinstalling the drivers after and as follow

sudo apt purge 'nvidia-*'

sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

sudo apt install nvidia-384 ** Also tried with nvidia-387

Checked if an old version of compiler (update-alternatives –config gcc) but gcc v7.2.0 is the only one I have

• The BIOS is set to use only PCI-E card video

Note:

I can load Ubuntu successfully when I use the generic (recovery mode) only, but not the normal one.

My Nvidia card is GTX1080Ti.

This issue started after upgrading from 16.10 to 17.10.

The booting time is increasingly slower, lagging at loading initial ramdisk (may be unrelated)

It has been widely reported that none of the proprietary nVidia drivers work with Wayland yet. So you have the choice of running 17,10 on Xorg or, if you want to use Wayland, purging all of your nVidia drivers and relying on the kernel Nouveau driver for your nVidia GPU

This sounds similar to an issue I was having, which I answered over in this thread

It seems that the Ubuntu update switched me to a low-latency kernel, which did not automatically update my kernel headers installation like other kernel upgrades have, and the nvidia binary packages require the kernel headers to be present. Try the following:

sudo apt purge 'nvidia-*'
sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo apt install nvidia-384

Note that I did prevent gdm from using Wayland prior to trying anything, and from what I understand Wayland won't currently work with the nvidia binaries, so I'd advise ensuring it's disabled in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf by uncommenting the line #WaylandEnable=false.

Ubuntu – Reinstall nvidia drivers

If the previous recommendations have not worked, you might want to try the following:

Reinstall the operating system.
After installation, open a terminal and type:
```
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
```

In a terminal type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

In a terminal type:
```
sudo apt-get update
```

In a terminal type command:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-340 nvidia-settings

(340 being the Nvidia driver version you need to install and currently the only drivers version that supports legacy hardware such as yours) 6. Reboot your machine. 7. Check if the Nvidia driver is installed. Open a terminal and type:

    lsmod | grep nvidia

You should see something like this:
