Does not show the current status of pidgin in the system tray.
Status always is Offline.

I think this post at "OMG! Ubuntu" would help you get what you are looking for. If not, I'd recommend you search the site as I have run into numerous posts there about monochrome app icons both for the desktop as well as for the indicator applet (a.k.a "tray")
For 12.10 and older:
execute:
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"

and remember to set the system tray to "always" in pidgin preferences.
If the change doesn't take effect immediately, run unity --replace

I found that if you enable the Libnotify Popups plugin (pidgin-libnotify) in Tools->Plugins then this problem is resolved. You can set your status via the system tray menu and you can also close the Pidgin Buddy List window and it will remain running. If you don't want notifications you can also configure this plugin in the Plugins menu.
