Ubuntu – Ubuntu 12.04 and 13.10 freeze and white screen with nvidia gtx 660

I've been trying to get Ubuntu to work (dual booted with Win7) on my new computer for a week now and have not found a working solution. System specs:

Intel Core i7-4771 @ 3.50 GHz
250 GB SSD Samsung 840 EVO
16 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660

The last item is the suspected culprit…

I first installed 12.04 which worked fine (but did not detect my nvidia card) until it updated, then one of two things happened (I have reinstalled 12.04 several times):
1) I got a white screen but with the mouse visible, and it was possible to open a graphical terminal with Ctrl-t and run programs from there.
2) After updating the nvidia driver I got a completely black screen and could not even open a terminal using Ctrl-Alt-F1.

I then tried installing 13.10 but it freezes on splash screen and I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to open a terminal. I can't even get the keyboard to work in failsafe mode!

I'm not familiar with debugging this kind of problem and would really appreciate help. As it is now i can't use Ubuntu, which is a shame…

Thanks for the reply floppy!

What I did in the end was to do a clean install of 12.04 and install nvidia-304. Then I got the familiar black screen with a white-outline cross, but when I typed my password and hit "enter" i got a white screen and could do Alt-t to open a terminal.

What eventally solved it was switching to Unity 2d by typing:

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s ubuntu-2d

Now, after installing mesa-utils, the system recognized my graphics card and I can see that it is in use by using the command:

sudo /sbin/lsmod | grep nvidia

I will have to make due with unity 2d :)

I finally found a solution.

for anyone who faces a similar problem, this is what I did in the end (and what I think was what solved it :)):

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-source
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe nvidia_current
sudo gdm restart

now the system works like a charm.

I have ubuntu 13.04 64 bit and same problem: Nvidia GTX 750ti and no boot.
I solve by following these steps:

go on nvidea driver download I have get NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-334.21.run
put it in a folder you remember (your home) and make it executable (chmod u+x ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-334.21.run)
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf or sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
add at the end this lines

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

and save
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub or better if you like vim: sudo vim /etc/default/grub
find

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and change it to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"
sudo update-grub
now you have to go text-only:
use CTRL+ALT+F1 to go on text-only
to come back on graphic mode use CTRL+ALT+F7
1. sudo gdm service stop or sudo service lightdm stop
2. sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-334.21.run
3. it give you some warning on pre build script I have continued
4. it ask you to accept some condition, you give all yes
5. let it change xorg.profile for you
6. sudo reboot

if you have trouble at reboot you can do a new reboot and start in recovery mode:

Advanced options
recovery mode

after this if you continue by the normal boot you can login in graphical mode but after you are logged in you have to repeat step 7,8,9

at next login you can boot on graphical mode.

this procedure has worked for me I hope work for you too.
