Ubuntu – The installer encountered an unrecoverable error and will now reboot

or "and will now run a desktop…."

I tried installing it with a CD..
it installs ubuntu to a certain point and then stops (after the name password window).. the last thing I see before the error pops up is a big white window with an ">" on the right side.

I tried to gather some debug info via ctrl+alt+f2 but whenever I type something in it tells me I do not have permission to do so.

Follow these steps to fix the problem:

TRY Ubuntu from USB or CD

Open terminal, and type:

sudo apt-get remove ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu

Start the installation

Like you most boards just tell me too use open-jdk. what most people don't seem to understand that open-jdk and jdk-7 are not one to one mappings of each other and many tools relied upon by developers simply don't work with open-jdk. ANYWAY...

I found a solution which solved the problem for me. Hopefully it will work for you.

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-java7-installer* 

sudo apt-get purge oracle-java7-installer

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*java* 

sudo apt-get update 

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java 

sudo apt-get update 

sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer
