Ubuntu – Terminal commands for installing g++ 4.8

Could somebody please advise how I could install g++ 4.8 ? I understand its not an official release yet (and that I would need to manually download a file) but I get internal compiler bug issues with 4.7 and apparently the bug has been fixed in 4.8.

The problem is I do not know how to manually install g++ 4.8 when downloading the file etc.

For 13.10:

Just use sudo apt-get install g++-4.8.

For 13.04 and earlier:

Use the ubuntu-toolchain ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install g++-4.8

It's likely you need to install the libc6-dev package. The errors you see indicate the linker (ld) is unable to link against the C library (and the object files it mentions, crt1.o for example, are part of this package).

I suggest you do sudo apt-get install build-essential, it will install, well, the essential tools and packages for basic builds to work. build-essential is a meta-package, which doesn't install any files of its own but depends on the required packages, so it's a safe bet to install it.

The 64-bit bits/c++config.h file is provided on 32-bit systems (and vice-versa) by installing the g++-multilib package, so you need to install that package either using Software Center, Synaptic, or via the terminal using

sudo apt-get install g++-multilib

This is just a dependency package that resolves to g++-4.8-multilib for the default gcc/g++ version, and in turn depends on lib64stdc++-4.8-dev (64-bit compilation on 32-bit) or libx32stdc++-4.8-dev (32-bit compilation on 64-bit) - it is these that contain the actual header files.

There is an equivalent set of packages for the plain C compiler gcc.
