What ways are there to shut down a computer remotely? My desktop is running Ubuntu 11.04 desktop edition and when I try to shut it down remotely using ssh, it doesn't actually work. I used the command sudo shutdown now. Afterwards, it said that the system is going down for maintenance NOW or whatever. However, when I got home, I came to discover that the computer was still on stuck on the Plymouth shut-down screen.

I would like to know some other ways to shut down remotely and it would also be nice to know why sudo shutdown now doesn't actually work.

Shutdown doesn't turn off the computer unless you use the -P option:

sudo shutdown -P now

Alternatively you can use sudo poweroff which does the same thing.

There's one dirty solution

a) create /etc/init.d/reshutdown with the contents

 if [ -f /home/shutdown.chk ];
 then
    rm /home/shutdown.chk

b) Execute: sudo chmod ugo+x /etc/init.d/reshutdown
b) Execute: sudo update-rc.d reshutdown start 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 .

c) Then to shutdown execute: sudo service reshutdown reshutdown

This works here:

ssh {user}@{ip-adres} sudo poweroff

It will ask twice for a password unless you copy the ssh key to your remote computer and make poweroff accessible by non root user.

Make it a loop for all IP's you need (pseudo code->)

for host in {ip1, {ip2}, {ip3} ; do ssh $host poweroff ; done

Or even easier... clusterssh

ClusterSSH (cssh, crsh, ctel) allows you to control multiple ssh, rsh or telnet sessions from a single input window. You can also configure clusters of machines for easy invocation and interact with individual terminal windows during a session.
