Ubuntu – Screen turns off while watching video (VLC player & SM player)

I'm on ubuntu 12.04 and I've already read similar questions and answers regarding this issue but none of them reported the same problem as I have.

The problem is that the screen turns off after 10 minutes while I watch a movie. No matter which player I use (VLC or SM), it still happens. It used to log me out too, but I changed the default setting as follows

After changing the setting, it doesn't log out automatically but it still turns off the screen.
It seems like, system simply ignores the video players activities. How to solve this one (bug)?

Please do:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled "false"

That should keep the screen from turning off.

Go to System Settings → System info → Default Applications, and set it there. It works in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).

In Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) and later, it's found in System Settings → Details → Default Applications.

There are couple of settings that you should check in VLC:
1) Tools --> Preferences --> Show All --> Video --> Disable screensaver
2) Tools --> Preferences --> Show All --> Advanced --> Inhibit the power management daemon during playback
If both of this options are checked, you could try a simple wrapper script which disables the monitor modes that will power down, standby or blank the screen prior to calling VLC:

#!/bin/bash

#Disable modes
/usr/bin/xset -dpms &
/usr/bin/xset s off &

#Open VLC
/usr/bin/vlc "$@"

#Re-enable modes
/usr/bin/xset dpms
/usr/bin/xset s on
exit
