Ubuntu – Screen flickering since Ubuntu install

I have a screen flickering since my first Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS installation and tried everything mentioned in this post: Flickering screen with Intel graphics on Ubuntu 17.04
and setting it to nomodeset helps. My problem is that if i set it to nomodeset my second screen, connected via HDMI isn't recognized.

If i don't set nomodeset, HDMI is recognized and it does not flicker on the HDMI screen, just on my laptop screen.

I would love to use both screens!

Your video adapter is probably poorly supported by the old 4.4 kernel.

You can upgrade the kernel in Ubuntu 16.04 to a newer major version by running

sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-16.04

I guess you have read the Wily release notes saying

AMD's fglrx driver does not work with the current kernel (1493888).
It is warmly recommended to uninstall the fglrx driver before upgrading to
Ubuntu 15.10.
The open source "radeon" driver can be used as a temporary replacement
until a fix is available.

Why else would you have removed fglrx before upgrade in the first place?

Either downgrade to Kernel 4.1 or use radeon until a fix of fglrx becomes available.

Have a look at the Release Notes. It tells exactly what is going to happen, and IMHO, it is a step in the right direction, not a problem.

The fglrx driver is now deprecated in 16.04, and we recommend its open source alternatives (radeon and amdgpu). AMD put a lot of work into the drivers, and we backported kernel code from Linux 4.5 to provide a better experience.

When upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 from a previous release, both the fglrx driver and the xorg.conf will be removed, so that the system is set to use either the amdgpu driver or the radeon driver (depending on the available hardware).
