Ubuntu – Samsung Series 5 overheating

I bought a Samsung Series 5 Ultra 2 weeks ago and installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I am experiencing problems with overheating. When streaming, watching a movie or when having several programms/actions going on at the same time the CPU temperature rises to 95 degrees and the computer freezes. This happens sometimes when the computer is on battery and always when it is recharging. When I am using the computer on battery the CPU temperature is floating from around 75-95 degrees depending what it's doing. When the battery is recharging the CPU temperature is ranging from 88-95 degrees no matter what tasks it performs.

Have anyone experienced this and how may the problem be solved?

You should consider installing jupiter

You can select power modes with it, it's very easy to control, just set it to power on command, you wont notice that your laptop is on, until you start using heavy apps. Plus it will stay way cooler.

open terminal and do this:

add the repository
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter
update
sudo apt-get update
install jupiter
sudo apt-get install jupiter
and to other people reading this and are using an Asus EEPC netbook, install this asswell
sudo apt-get install jupiter-support-eee

sudo -i

install thinkfan
```
apt install thinkfan
```

configure kernel module

echo "options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/thinkfan.conf

reload kernel module
```
modprobe thinkpad_acpi
```

configure default thinkfan configuration

sed -i 's|START=no|START=yes|' /etc/default/thinkfan
sed -i 's|DAEMON_ARGS="-q"|DAEMON_ARGS="-q -b 1 -s 15"|' /etc/default/thinkfan

Check your sensors

find /sys/devices -type f -name "temp*_input"

and this is the result in my Lenovo Thinkpad x220:

/sys/devices/virtual/hwmon/hwmon0/temp1_input
/sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon2/temp3_input
/sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon2/temp1_input

write in /etc/thinkpad.conf based on the results above

Enable the service so it will be started automatically at every boot and drop privileges.

Reboot your notebook

After reboot, check the service

Ubuntu 20.04 – Fix Shutdown After Overheating

A full diagnosis of Hardware+Software system is hard to perform via askubuntu in your case. Hardware issues are particularly difficult.

An alternative for a first step in the diagnosis may be provided by installing another OS side-by-side with your Ubuntu 20.04, and performing intensive testing as well.

You could run the same Python program (if you can configure it to use all cores). Even so, it might not be running under the exact same condition you see shutdowns. There are quite a few applications for testing performance out there, and they should be good enough (or even more stringent than your program). And it would not have any "contamination" from your possible Ubuntu 20.04 configuration.

Later on, when the full diagnosis is finished, you can get rid of this OS and reclaim the space for your Ubuntu.
