Ubuntu – Removing desktop icons

In Ubuntu 14.04 Unity places Computer, Home and Trash icons on the desktop. I've tried using Unity-Tweak to remove them but they're still there. How can I remove them?

Run this command from a terminal:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false

Or to do it with GUI open dconf-editor and go to org -> gnome -> desktop -> background and uncheck "show-desktop-icons."

You can install nemo (Linux Mint's default file manager, which still supports desktop icons) with

sudo apt install nemo

Then, open the Startup Applications program in your Applications menu. Click Add, and enter nemo-desktop into the Command: field. Click Save, then Close. Restart. You should have desktop icons!

On Ubuntu 18.04 desktop icons are provided by nautilus-desktop which is a part of the nautilus package, not by the "Desktop Icons" extension as you have suspected. So it seems nautilus-desktop is not working correctly. To fix the issue purge and reinstall the nautilus package and restart your computer.
