Ubuntu – Proprietary ATI Driver fglrx kills the Video

So, I'll explain the problem, but first I want to cry aloud PLEASE HELP!

I've used Ubuntu 12.04 for more than half an year and everything is set up just the way I want it. But I did a stupid mistake – I installed Proprietary ATI Driver fglrx.

Now the system boots normally, but after I choose to launch Ubuntu the screen goes black and my monitor doesn't receive any signals.

I tried some guides in recovery mode, but it's not working. Finally I started live cd and replaced files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ with original files. Still not working.

Please give me any ideas how to remove this killer!

Yey! I did it after reading some more. It was really annoying because when you boot without video, you have to shut down in inappropriate manner, so in recovery mode you get first some errors.

But the whole point is to get in recovery mode and type two lines:

mount -o remount,rw /
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*

Im using an Packard Bell easynote TJ75 with a ati mobility radeon HD5650, and its not bad at all.

Compiz benchmark is around 500~600 frames/sec, i can play good World of Warcraft or Call of duty MW 4 (under wine), for example (well, there is some slowdown sometimes).

BTW, im using the experimental drivers:

Sometimes compiz has some issue (for example, does not load the windows icons, minimixe, maximize and close), but i dont know if this is really related with the ati card.

I have an ati on my desktop too, with ubuntu 9.10 no kind of driver used to works, with ubuntu 10.04 it works perfectly.

As you see, ati card and drivers does not work bad at all.

I know when I have reinstalled fglrx I have usually done what you have done but slightly differently as I have usually had to go back to the open source versions for a while.

I found this guide to be really helpful

However this worked for me last time and got rid of pretty much all of the ati/fglrx stuff left on my pc

sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh  # (if it exists)


sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*

As a further measure I also check what else is left

dpkg -l '*fglrx*'

and

locate fglrx

I also make sure I have a correct set of open source drviers installed

sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon 
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I then rebuild the the proprietary fglrx/Catalyst driver to be installable through the Restricted Hardware Driver Manager (a.k.a. jockey)

 sudo apt-get install fglrx-modaliases

After these have all been completed I reboot and now the open source drviers are working AND xserver-xorg has bene rebuilt I reinstall fglrx

sudo apt-get install fglrx

That seemed to do the trick last time.
