Printer Add Button Not Enabled in Ubuntu 12.04

I am trying to set-up a network printer on my system.

Navigated to System Setting>>Printing and viola the Add button out there is disabled.

When i troubleshooted using Help it said that the CUPS print spooler does not appear to be running. To correct this, choose System->Administration->Services from the main menu and look for 'cups' service.

Please tell me what to do in order to add a printer Following is the ScreenShot of what i was doing

Try to open a terminal (or alt-f2 to display command execution prompt) and run

sudo system-config-printer

and check if you can add a printer from there.

I had this same problem on an Arch Linux system. I solved it by installing python-pysmbc package. The equivalent package for ubuntu is "python-smbc". So just do:

sudo apt-get install python-smbc python3-smbc

And you should be good to go. Restart "system-config-printer" to make sure the new dependencies get used.

Ubuntu – Printing service not available

I had a similar problem (lubuntu 16.04) with 'printing services being unavailable'. This condition prevented the system from listing the local USB printer for selection. This was overcome installing CUPS:

sudo apt-get install cups

Next bounce the service:

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

Finally, restart the machine.

I did not need to install CUPS on my instance of Ubuntu 16.04.
