I need to format a disk to install Windows 8 on it (single boot). I cannot do it from Windows (I have only Ubuntu for now).
So my questions are:
Will the disk formatted to NTFS with Ubuntu be slower than if I had formatted it to NTFS from Windows (the drivers are not the same as far as I know) ?
Or can I just simply format to NTFS from the Windows 8 dvd ?
You can still recover them by using photorec which comes with testdisk after you install it. Type in a terminal photorec and select the hard drive / partition you wish to analyze and the place where you want to store all recovered files (Should be a place not on the same hard drive you are trying to recover from).
Your same case has also happened to me. Trying to recover files from a previous NTFS or FAT32 partition that was formatted to Ext3 or Ext4. In the end it recovered all files we needed.
gparted (GNU Partition Editor) is a good graphical tool for formating drives to a variety of different filesystem types. You can install it with sudo apt-get install gparted.
Just as when you are using Disks, be very careful that you are making changes to the correct device. You can format your device to NTFS using the following steps:
ntfsIf Windows still doesn't recognize the device, the partition table may be in a different type than the MS-DOS type (Ubuntu uses gpt partition type by default I think). Click "View >> Device Information" from the menu to see what the partition table type is. In this case, use the "Device >> Create Partition Table" menu option to change the partition table type to MS-DOS. You may have to follow the above steps again to create your NTFS partition.

The drivers might not be the same but a formatted NTFS partition is a formatted NTFS partition. What ever the tool you use.
By the way: The Ubuntu driver is for mounting and writing to a NTFS partition already formatted as NTFS. In general you format a disk from the GParted software, not Ubuntu itself (though you can install GParted in Ubuntu and use it from there). If the GParted NTFS formatting tool was not up to standard Windows would consider it a corrupted file system and refuse to start from it.
That question is off topic ... but the answer is: of course. You can format from any installation media since one of the 1st things to do is to set up your partition for a file system structure that that system needs to run on.
