Ubuntu – NVidia FX5200 Can’t set resolution upper than 800×600

When I install nVidia drivers from terminal with this command:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

… and I reboot, I get the max. resolution 800×600.
I added new mode successfully with xrandr, but my display is 480p.
My display is connected to my PC with HDMI and in Windows I was have VGA resolution on HDMI but after I installed in Ubuntu the drivers, the resolution is 480p.How to fix that?
And can I change the 420p to 720p or 1080i ? Because my display have option "HDMI Full PC mode" which is good because I can see my display fully, but the Full PC mode is not supported for 480p.

Your FX5200 is 9 years old now - see here. It's not supported by the Nvidia current driver anymore. You need the 173.x branch of the driver. (read here). Install it using the nvidia-173-updates package instead of current.

I have been having resolution problems with my brand new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installation and I couldn' t even see the choice of the 1680x1050 resolution. But then it was so easily and user-friendly solved: Just went to Additional Drivers in the System Settings tab and activated the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver(post-release updates)(version current-updates) and it worked for me. Ok, this worked for me.

1) Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2) In the section "Monitor", change HorizSync and VertRefresh to the correct values (consult your monitor specifications in the user manual). This is important or you will likely get an "signal out of range/sync" error in your monitor (if you make this mistake press ctr+alt+f1 and edit xorg.conf from console).

3) In the section "Screen" add this line.

Option "ModeValidation" "AllowNonEdidModes, NoVirtualSizeCheck, NoMaxPClkCheck, NoWidthAlignmentCheck, NoExtendedGpuCapabilitiesCheck"

4) Restart the system.

5) xrandr --addmode still won't work but you will have more resolutions available. Check out my new xrandr output:
