Ubuntu – No sound via HDMI on 13.04

I have upgraded to 13.04 and now I have no sound. I use an HDMI lead to connect my PC to the TV, but now I don't have that as an option to choose from.

I just have two output options:

Digital
Analogue

Any suggestions please?

it's a known bug. Review & subscribe to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1169984 The bug report has workarounds while we wait for a fix to be committed. The workaround which works for everyone is to use the mainline 3.8 kernel as described in the report.

I remember logging in and logging out after plugging in the HDMI device and changing the sound settings to HDMI Output seemed to help in my case.

Additionally, running 'alsamixer' in terminal seemed to have made a difference before.

With the HDMI cable plugged in, run the following utility:

speaker-test --channels 2 --rate 48000 --device hw:0,3

(for others, the hw:x,y is x = card, y = device)

This just runs a sound test with static bouncing back and forth. Once it has played out of each speaker, hit Ctrl+c to stop it, and then check in your sound settings to see if the HDMI output is now listed under the internal device.
