Ubuntu – Need to convert a video file from mp4 to xvid

I checked out the questions with similar titles and didn't find anything that I thought would help. I am attempting to convert a video into an avi, preferably xvid. The video file's Video and Audio Properties are as follows:

Video
Dimensions: 1280x544
Codec H.264/AVC
Framerate: 24 frames per second
Bitrate: 774 kpbs

Audio
Codec: MPEG-4 AAC audio
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 32 kpbs

I have tried numerous times to convert this into an Xvid codec AVI but I have had no luck successfully getting the audio to sync properly. I am using Openshot to attempt conversion, using the libxvid codec and AVI format, but I am unsure of the proper audio settings I should use. What settings should I use to convert this video with Openshot? If it is not possible with Openshot, or if there is a better application to use, I would be grateful to know that as well.

If you're just looking for conversion, you might want to try arista or transmageddon instead of Openshot. Arista Transcoder and Transmageddon are applications focused on just doing the conversion and nothing else. Especially Arista Transcoder contains a lot of presets, of which one is xvid. Install them using the command sudo apt-get install arista transmageddon.

Perhaps the easiest tool for that is ffmpeg, or avconv from the libav-tools package. Libav is a fork of FFmpeg, which Ubuntu switched to for a few years until Ubuntu 15.04. It is one of the backends for many of the GUI tools mentioned in other answers.

Changing container without re-enconding content could not be simpler:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -codec copy output.mp4

It auto-detects a Matroska to MP4 container conversion based on input/output filenames.
-codec copy stream copies, or "re-muxes", the streams from the input to the output without re-encoding. Think of it like a copy and paste.
Default stream selection behavior is to select only one stream per stream type. For example, if your input has two video streams and one audio stream then only the video stream with the largest frame size will be selected. Add -map 0 if you want to select all streams from the input.
Some containers may not support some formats. So check if your chosen container format, be it mkv, mp4 or even avi has support for all the content in your files (video, audio, subtitles, data, etc). For example, mp4 does not support SubRip subtitles (.srt files).

There is a bug filed with libav about this exact issue. Depressingly, is doesn't seem to be addressed. I think it's best to consider avconv a good encoding tool, but not a good encapsulating tool.

The best way to go about it is to use MP4Box from GPAC. It's a utility which seems to be primarily concerned with encapsulating media streams into mp4 files. It does not do en/de/transcoding, for instance. If you install GPAC on Ubuntu, you can say:

MP4Box -add non-streamable.mp4 new-shiny-streamable.mp4

MP4Box by default makes the mp4 files streamable:

As of version 0.2.4, MP4Box always stores the file with 0.5 second interleaving and meta-data at the begining, making it suitable for HTTP streaming. (source)
