Mouse Click Not Working in Ubuntu, Xfce, and Xubuntu – How to Fix

I have been using Xubuntu and Ubuntu on our older home PC for almost 2 years without much trouble until today when the mouse seemed to not work properly. I can move the pointer around and click but after a while the left and right click does not work. I can hover over a button and clicking shows the visual effect of lowering the button but it won't respond with the action required. It seems to happen sooner when opening a firefox window, but is not restricted to firefox.
I have looked on this forum and others for advice and I have tried the following:

compiz --replace
metacity --replace

I have even reinstalled the Xserver.
I checked the ximput to see if the buttons were not assigned but everything seems OK.
I am on the 3.2.0-54 kernel and running Xubuntu/Ubuntu 12.01. And I have tried different mice on different usb ports and they all do the same thing.
Help will be much appreciated.

A distribution upgrade was what was needed:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I don't know how but my previous kernel must have been corrupted.

Configuration

Following these instructions and this answer and this document:

Do not execute the script shown in the question.
Edit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf.

Append the following lines:

Save and restart X.

Restart X

Enable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X as follows:

echo setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp >> ~/.xprofile
chmod +x ~/.xprofile
~/.xprofile

This:

Sets the small left button as the wheel activator (click and hold to scroll).
Sets the small left button as the "back button" (click, no scroll).
Sets the small right button as middle-click to paste.
Enables horizontal and vertical scrolling.
Disables both large buttons as chord-click.

Addendum

After ~~rebooting~~ restarting X, I found the scrolling no longer worked, possibly due to an upgrade. If this happens to you, try:

Remove the following files (I moved mine to ~/.):

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-vmmouse.conf
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-marblemouse.conf
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-evdev-quirks.conf

Remove any additional mouse input device settings from:
```
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
```

Verification

Verify the settings using (where 8 is the device number; yours will likely vary):

xinput get-button-map 8

Ubuntu 13.04 – Fix Mouse Buttons Not Responding

I have the same problem with my R.A.T 7. Everything works fine when testing but after installation the mouse buttons and scroll wheel simply do not work in applications. Its like it is locked to the first application opened.

After rebooting without the RAT 7 (totally unplugged from USB) and using my Wireless Microsoft 1000 everything works perfectly.

This seems to be a well known issue that has been around for some time and effect all the RATS (3,5,7,9 and MMO7). There are several sites out there most referring to changes to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Making these changes worked perfectly for me in 12.04 but in 13.04 I first had to get the actual mouse name again.
