Ubuntu – Magic Trackpad 2 is not recognized as synpatic touchpad

I have found a lot of posts in the Internet working with Apple Magic Trackpad on Ubuntu. I bought Apple Magic Trackpad 2, and seems like it is not recognized as a touchpad. I can do left click and cursor movements, but nothing else (not scrolling, no two finger click, …). Any ideas that I can make it work?

There is a driver available for the Apple Magic Trackpad 2 on Github. Highlights from the README.md file:

robbi5 created a dkms package with the driver that is known to work with kernel 4.4.0-57-generic on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Used this driver in combination with the mtrack-driver, to make use of the multitouch feature (e.g. 2-finger-tap for right-click, etc)
Right now the driver only works over USB. OP has submitted an official patch to linux-input.

So far I've only had success in 10.10 by using the "synaptics" driver.

Put the following in your xorg.conf:

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "multitouch touchpad"
        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "synaptics"
EndSection

Once that's done, you should be able to tweak the cursor speed, scrolling speed and other parameters with gpointing-device-settings. Not sure if it's legacy now, but you may need

Option "SHMConfig" "True"

in the above section for that as well.

I have got the Apple Magic Trackpad too and of course, I have to admit that it works better on Mac OS X. Thanks to OMG!Ubuntu I discovered Touchegg a very nice app that gives us many options for increase usability. Give it a try!
