Ubuntu – Lenovo dock HDMI audio external monitor

I got a Lenovo T440s and a docking station, where the docking station is connected to a monitor (specs) with internal speakers through HDMI.

My problem is I cannot seem to be able to change the audio output from the laptop speakers to my monitor´s speakers (as can be seen in the screenshot below, there is no HDMI option).

My laptop does not have a HDMI input, only my dock has. I suspect this is the reason why it is not detected and shown in the sound options.

Any help or insight appreciated.

In this window click on Analog Stereo Output.
There would be option like HDMI+Analog Stereo Output(or Duplex).

With the HDMI cable plugged in, run the following utility:

speaker-test --channels 2 --rate 48000 --device hw:0,3

(for others, the hw:x,y is x = card, y = device)

This just runs a sound test with static bouncing back and forth. Once it has played out of each speaker, hit Ctrl+c to stop it, and then check in your sound settings to see if the HDMI output is now listed under the internal device.

Ubuntu – Ubuntu 16.04 HDMI Audio Not working, speaker-test works

Here is how I got things working in case anyone else want to know. It may save you some time.

The problem seemed to be that pulse audio was send sound to card 1 device 3 which produced no sound with sound-test command. I needed to switch it to card 1 device 7, which did produce sound with sound-test.

I added two lines to the file /etc/pulse/default.pa

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:1,7
set-default-sink output 2

The hw:1,7 corresponds to the "card 1" and "device 7" shown for the device in the output of the "aplay -l". This was the card and device that played sound from sound-test. Number for the default sink is the index of the device shown by "pacmd list-sinks"

I also had to turn off the device corresponding the hw:1,3 using pavucontrol.

Also helpful was the site PulseAudio/Examples, in particular the section on HDMI output configuration.
