Ubuntu – Laptop screen goes blank

My laptop screen goes blank (everything else responsive otherwise) after a random number of seconds (of active use, not idle) of booting the OS.

I've noted, everything is fine after fresh installation, going to the google.com/chrome link malfunctions it permanently.
Same issue with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS and Linux Mint 13.
I've Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset.

Do anyone know the fix?
I don't know a lot of command-line, so please suggest an easy solution, if any at all.

I've just had the same issue today, on a freshly installed 15.04. My problem was about the animation on the Google Chrome download page, and my graphics card's driver's not being able to handle it. I am using an Nvidia graphics card, so I tried installing proprietary Nvidia driver and problem solved.

I suggest you try installing/updating the driver for your graphics card, to do so you can check Additional Drivers tab of the Software & Updates in System Settings:

I has this issue on my X200. Workaround for me was:

Turn off screen lock in the "Brightness and Lock" settings.

The only problem is that it wakes without a password, which isn't too big of a deal for me.

The problem was in the DPMS settings. These are settable in two places:

Under System Settings / Configure Energy Saving Settings / Screen Energy Saving. (Screenshot). Enabling this and then disabling it again fixed the problem.

Under the X server DPMS settings, accessible through xset. The output of xset q included:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 33    Suspend: 49    Off: 66
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

which explains the 33 seconds. Enabling and disabling “Screen Energy Saving” as described above reset this to:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 21600    Suspend: 32400    Off: 43200
  DPMS is Disabled

presumably the command xset -dpms or xset dpms off would have fixed the problem in the same way.
