screen recording works fine, but adding the webcam just adds a black square in the top right corner, which I can move with alt + click & drag
If I do a webcam ONLY recording (no screen), and then hit "finish recording", it just stops recording and there's no prompting to save the file.
Any ideas?
A trick of PulseAudio could be used as workaround, by creating a Virtual Sink and Loopback microphone to it.
pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=Virtual1
pactl load-module module-loopback latency_msec=1 sink=Virtual1
I just give it a try, after I verified the source code of those combo boxes. It does record microphone. The only problem here is "Microphone" and "Speakers" label should be swapped. You may count it as a bug!

Speakers to record microphoneMicrophone to record speakersKazam is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but it's an old version (1.4) and ppa:kazam-team/unstable-series has not been updated for 16.04 (and does not include debian patches).
You can install Kazam 1.5.4 from my own ppa (it provides the debian packages up to 20.04):
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:sylvain-pineau/kazam
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kazam

About Webcam:
I had the same issue that it was showing a black square in the top right corner. But then I played with some of the settings in File -> Preferences -> Webcam settings as shown here.
Now, if you'll try recording from webcam then it might work fine.
Saving the file:
As shown here under File -> Preferences -> Webcam, you have an option to Save files automatically which you can turn on.
