I tried several existing ones, but could not find a working Places indicator. The ones I found were outdated, ppa's were no longer maintained.

The ppa version is a modular one; you can choose what to show in the menu:

Save the icon (right-click > save as) exactly named:
..in one and the same directory as the script.
Test- run the script by the command:
If all works fine, add it to Startup Applications: Dash > Startup Applications > Add. Add the command:
About the indicator
The indicator shows:
~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
Changing/added/removed bookmarks are updated dynamically
