Ubuntu – Is SLiM (simple login manager) compatible with 11.10

I have been reading about SLiM and am wondering if I were to install it in ubuntu 11.10 if it is compatible or if it would cause serious issues?

Slim hasn't seen any update since September 2005. It may work for sessions that haven't changed since then but it has the following shortcomings:

  • Does not initialize policykit
  • Does not unlock the seahorse or gnupg key vaults
  • Does not start any DBus-related things

In short, if you are going to use desktops in the range of twm, windowmaker, openbox, it surely is a lightweight choice but you will witness serious degradation if you are headed for gnome, kde, unity or xfce.

Ubuntu – the current situation with BtrFS and 11.10

BtrFS is under develpment, don't use it for critical data.

We do have tools to fix broken FS for some time. See apt-cache show btrfs-tools. This package contains also btrfs-convert for converting from ext3. I don't know about ext4.

I don't know about any GUI tools for that but I don't expect any GUI tool for COW feature. It happens under the hood.

I don't expect Ubuntu 12.04 to use BtrFS as a default FS since 12.04 is to be LTS and BtrFS is too young.

Win8 will likely override GRUB so it won't be possible to boot into Ubuntu. Keep Ubuntu LiveCD handy :) The process will include booting from the LiveCD after installing Windows and then using one of the methods of restoring GRUB described here

After you make your Ubuntu bootable again, you run update-grub to regenerate the config - after this the new Windows install should appear in the boot menu. If it doesn't then you'll need to edit the config manually following the instructions at the link above.
